Lukashenko: accommodation needs to be built in areas that lack labour force

Speaking of Orsha as an example, Aleksandr Lukashenko explained how he considers it necessary to change approaches in housing construction – so that, among other tasks, to provide numerous enterprises with labour force.

“On me way here I was thinking that we should build more housing here to attract people. There is not enough workforce here, but, around two decades ago, there were too many people, and there was unemployment. People are employed now, and there are many enterprises – in Baran, between Baran and Orsha, and everywhere, including in agriculture," the Head of State noted. “I think we will have to refocus and build [accommodation] where labour force is needed. This does not refer to families with many children and the military: these groups are sacred, and they are on a separate list. The rest of the money should be spent on housing construction in places where workers are needed."

"We need to build, as it was common in Soviet times: a large enterprise is built, and housing is then constructed nearby to attract people. Good salaries should also be paid. These were my reflections on my way here, while I was driving up to my native place and yours," the Belarusian leader noted.

Aleksandr Lukashenko warmly recalled that he had often visited and even lived in Orsha as a child. His mother worked at a local linen mill for several years, and there was a hostel not far from it. "We then moved to the village. The life was difficult here, so we moved to the village – and I went to school in Alexandria,” the Head of State shared his memories. “Generally speaking, Orsha is a close city for me. It is very nice and dear to my heart.”

The Belarusian leader praised the locals for keeping their city in order. "Your yards and streets are in perfect order, and I was really pleased to see that,” he said, speaking of the territories with private houses, which he passed on his way to the church.
