Lukashenko: it’s not my job to throw the country, millions of people into the crucible of war

The world has never come so close to the threshold of nuclear war as it has approached now – as stated by the President of Belarus, Aleksandr Lukashenko, at today’s solemn meeting on the occasion of Victory Day held at the Palace of the Republic

The Head of State revealed the details of the sudden practicing of the issues of the use of non-strategic nuclear weapons and explained why he openly speaks about it, “I want you to know that we have never been so close to a nuclear war than we are now. The Western states – and France is at the forefront of Europeans, you should know this – are daily declaring an escalation of tension, though doing this in the media only. Their statements are leading to an escalation of tension not only on the European continent, but also in the world as a whole.”

The Belarusian leader stressed that he is a peaceful man, and he does not want a war. “I am a historian, I know well that Belarus has never waged its own wars. Belarus has always been a theatre of military operations. I studied World War II and the Great Patriotic War not only from books. After becoming President, I learnt of the true state of affairs in June 1941 and some time earlier on our border, when we believed in what we were being told. We were being convinced then that there would be no war, that everything was fine,” he said.

In no case should Belarus succumb to provocations, and Aleksandr Lukashenko warned, “We are not going to succumb to any provocations. If we, for example (God forbid), start a war against Poland, we understand perfectly well that we will not win it. Meanwhile, it is not my job to throw the country, millions of people into the crucible of war.”
